The 2024 Irvine Innovation Economy Report finds that the City has built a strong foundation for innovation, anchored by a business-friendly environment, high-quality educational institutions, a well-educated workforce, strong local employers, and a high quality of life that attracts entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders.
Today, Irvine’s innovation economy is driven by three major clusters: Healthcare Innovation with approximately 21,000 jobs, Medical Technologies with more than 19,000 jobs, and Enabling & Creative Technologies with more than 22,000 jobs in 2023.
The analysis also highlights opportunities to strengthen patent activity, new business formation, federal and university R&D investment, and later-stage venture capital. Looking ahead, the report identifies major growth potential in innovation industries that can help Irvine create high-quality jobs, strengthen fiscal resilience, and reinforce its position as a leading innovation hub.
